YE
OLDE SMOKEY HOUSE RESTAURANT & BAR
Mark
or Nina Dawes
offer a warm welcome to the Olde Smokey Inn, a fine turn of
the 17th Century pub and restaurant
in Marldon Paignton Devon.
Considered
to be one of the oldest pubs in the area, the Smokey Inn is
the ideal location should you wish to visit us for a glass of
wine, a pint of traditional real ale, a tasty bar snack or a
enjoyable lunch or evening meal in our delightful restaurant.
Inside, you will find a relaxed ambiance full of style and comfort
with its cosy interior. During the cooler months the real log-burning
fire creates a lovely atmosphere whilst in warmer months you
can sit outside in our beer garden which enhances this charming
restaurant and pub watering hole.
The Smokey
as a building, as far as we know, dates back to around the 17th
century. The original building is the deep end of the bar area.
Photographs, which are displayed in our restaurant, clearly
show that the Smokey was originally two thatched cottages.
We have found records dating back as far as the late 18th century.
These records indicate that the building was even then used
as a pub. Due to the location and view of the bay, the tall
chimneys were used as a smoke signal to warn smugglers away
from the ports if customs officials were lurking. Hence the
name, Ye Olde Smokey House. There are some pictures and records
that indicate that the original name of the pub was either The
Ship Inn or The Ship Inn Olde Smokey House.
Today Ye Olde Smokey House on the outskirts of Paignton, on
the ring road between Torquay and Brixham, in the lovely village
of Marldon is one of Devon's best eating venues. The farmhouse
carvery and exclusive menu provide something for every one.
With
a well thought out wine list to compliment our menus which change
regularly, along with a high level of service, one can look
forward to food cooked to perfection and an afternoon or evening
of something just that little bit special.
